In the midst of recent national protests, Comcast has committed to do their part by piloting a new outreach plan to help create a more equitable, just, and inclusive society. This multiyear plan will allocate $100 million for a comprehensive fight injustice and inequality against any race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, or ability. This support will be in addition to the existing commitments the company currently makes to thousands of organizations supporting underrepresented communities through the Comcast NBC Universal Foundation or their social impact programs.
In addition to this new initiative, Comcast has extended their free internet and Wifi access programs in the midst of the continuing global pandemic. Comcast will continue to provide 60 days of free Internet service to new, eligible Internet Essentials customers through the end of this year to help provide additional support to students and families. This will include a waiver through the end of the year of the requirement that customers do not have a past due to balance with Comcast to qualify for the free offer. For individual internet users, Comcast is extending free access to the 1.5 million public Xfinity WiFi hotspots to anyone who needs them, including non-customers, through the end of 2020. Concerning these extensions, Dana Strong, President of Xfinity Consumer Services, said,
“For almost a decade, Comcast has been helping to level the playing field for families in need so they can benefit from all the Internet has to offer…Now more than ever, connectivity has become a vital tool for families to access educational resources for students, important news and information about their community and the world, telehealth applications, or to stay in touch with family and friends.”
In advancing these initiatives, Comcast has committed to devoting the best of their collective resources to help support communities in ways will make a lasting impact.
