Lesson Introduction: Today we are going to learn about a type of simple machine called a gear. We use gears in many ways. They are used in our cars, clocks, bikes,
fishing rods, can openers, even in wind-up toys. We are going to watch a short video about gears. (Show video)
After the video, pass around the can opener and have each student turn it to work the gears. Tell them not to touch the sharp part, just the handles and
the crank. Then divide the students into 9 groups and pass out the gear kits. Direct an exploration activity using the gear kits.
