Baking with Fractions

Lesson Description

In this activity Students practice manipulating fractions for making a food following a recipe. Students are given a recipe which has fractional ingredient measurements and use the original recipe to convert the it to make a smaller portion (1/2 , 2/3, etc.). This lesson uses math, science, and language arts skills. It also supports Social Studies, in that the recipe  is “Hard Tack” which was a food used by soldiers and pioneers in the 1800’s during travel/war times.

Materials and Supplies:

For each group:

  • Mixing Bowl
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • mini rolling pins
  • Aprons
  • whisk and rubber spatula
  • toaster oven baking pans
  • ingredients

To cook the biscuits:

  • Toaster oven
  • Oven mitts (for teacher use only)
