Lesson: One Material, Two Functions

Title
Lesson Description

In this lesson, Standard 2.3.3 is taught using STEM building toys. Students learn how different objects can be disassembled and  reshaped into new objects with different functions.

The teacher should pass out LEGOs to one table, give another table magnetic tiles, and give another table brain flakes. They then ask the students to design an object using the building toys they were given. Next, the teacher tells the students to disassemble the first object they created and create a different object using the exact same materials. The second object needs to serve a different function. The teacher collects all of the materials and asks the class if the two objects were made out of different material or the same thing. The students explain the two functions the objects served. The teacher can use the attached slides to talk more about how objects can be made out of the same material but serve a different function.
