What is this SPONSORSHIP?

The STEM Action Center values organizations who are dedicated to STEM education in Utah. This funding should serve three purposes: broaden student/community impact, increase student/community resources, and encourage student/community involvement in STEM activities.

Community Impact Sponsorships are for organizations that provide STEM learning opportunities outside of the regular school day. These could be community organizations, after-school clubs, summer programs, or any organization that works to enhance learning through regular/consistent programming opportunities with student/community participants. In order to apply, you will have to provide a W-9 for your organization.

Funding is available for:
  • Organizations that provide STEM learning opportunities outside of the regular school day
  • Programs that run during the 2023-2024 school year or summer programs between May - August 2024
  • Utah STEM organizations with a valid W-9 issued by the IRS
  • Activities that take place in the State of Utah
  • Programs ONE TIME during the 2024 fiscal year (runs July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024)
  • Programs that can provide a detailed annual report of the program and its outcomes after program completion (If this report is not submitted, applicants will be disqualified from sponsorship funding in the future.)

Requests vary, with a maximum award of $5,000. Please be aware that your organization is not guaranteed the full funding amount. The amount awarded is subject to the amount of applications received AND the amount of funds available (this dollar amount varies every year). Applicants should feel no obligation to request the full amount.

Funding is NOT available for:
  • Technology or other products used solely by staff (laptop, iPad, smart board, etc.)
  • Activities that take place outside of Utah
  • Teacher or staff professional development/training
  • Salaries or stipends for educators or staff
  • Food, apparel, flights, or lodging
  • Entertainment costs
  • Indirect (overhead) expenses which may include rent, salaries, construction costs, utilities, etc.

If your organization is awarded, you will:

  • Receive an email notifying you of your award
  • Be required to send an invoice from the organization to Shelby Averett at sdaverett@utah.gov (Receipts, shipping information, or proof of payment will not be accepted as an invoice.)
  • Be required to include the STEM Action Center logo in all marketing material related to the event
  • Be required to submit a final impact report after the event or program

Who can apply?
  • Schools and school districts
  • Nonprofit organizations
  • Municipalities or government agencies
  • Social service agencies
  • Libraries or community centers

Timeline
  • Application opens for submissions: July 1, 2023
  • Applicants notified of outcome: Within three weeks after application is submitted

Additional information
  • Please be realistic regarding your funding request. There are a lot of fantastic organizations providing amazing STEM opportunities. The funding is limited and our goal is to provide ample monetary support to as many STEM programs as we can.
  • Do not include any indirect costs in your application (this may include: rent for your space, salaries for your employees, construction costs, utilities etc.) We would like to see the funding go toward increasing STEM resources and providing equal access for all Utah students.
  • We understand your program may run through the summer and this is OK! If you are awarded, some of the deadlines may be increased to allow your organization plenty of time to complete all of the requirements.
  • If you are a school or district employee: BEFORE applying for this sponsorship, PLEASE review other STEM AC funding opportunities such as the Classroom Grant and Competition Grant.
  • For more information, please see the STEM Community Impact Sponsorship Guidelines, where you will find project description, expectations, timeline, and application components.
Questions for Consideration
What might a good application include?

A strong application reflects engaging activities that are hands-on, collaborative, and relevant. Programs should provide students with age-appropriate real-world problems and solutions using STEM subjects.

A strong application might aim to:

  • Increase dissemination
  • Enhance infrastructure for teaching
  • Promote teaching, training, and learning
  • Increase participation of underrepresented students

A strong application will also answer these questions thoughtfully and completely:

What does it mean to broaden student impact?

The STEM Action Center wants to encourage organizations to increase the amount of students participating in STEM activities. Your organization can use this funding to offer more events or increase your volunteer base. You may also use a portion of this funding for student scholarships that focus on significant financial need and/or traditionally underrepresented students.

What does it mean to increase resources for students?

The STEM Action Center is interested in students using technology or other STEM tools to increase their skills and that engage them in STEM subjects. You can use this funding for tools or materials that are used directly and only by the students. Resources purchased must be clearly aligned with project goals and outcomes.

What does it mean to encourage student involvement in STEM activities?

The STEM Action Center seeks to encourage first-time student participation (particularly among traditionally underrepresented students) and to attract the attention of students with a demonstrated interest in STEM fields. This funding can be used to reach such an audience.
