Finch Senses and Survival

Sarah Broadbent

Title
Lesson Description

Using a FINCH robot, students will develop an animal model with sensory receptors and demonstrate its behavior in response to environmental input. The FINCH robots will simulate an animal and students will create a habitat for their animal and finally code the robot to simulate how it would respond to different parts of the habitat such as food, shelter, and danger.

Two children work on a life cycle chart featuring a sun, caterpillar, butterfly, and leaves.

Supplies:

  • rulers
  • protractors
  • large chart paper
  • dry erase markers
  • paper markers
  • assorted LEGO optional
  • Finchbots (3 students to 1 bot)

With the attached lesson plan, educators can teach the SEEd Science Standard 4.1.2 – Develop and use a model of a system to describe how animals receive different types of information from their environment through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the information.
