Mitigating the Effects of Earthquakes

Sarah Broadbent

Title
Lesson Description

Students will be able to understand how engineering can mitigate the effects of earthquake damage on buildings.  Lots of different materials can be used for students to create the buildings. For example, here is the supply list from the teacher who submitted this lesson:

  • Round Toothpicks
  • Flat Toothpicks
  • Craft Sticks
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Gum Drops

The teacher will also need a shake table. There are many ways to get one or to make one. Kits like the Shake, Rattle & Roll Earthquake Board can be purchased while they also can be as simple as this small shake table using boards, rubber bands, and balls. Also, a lesson plan from the submitter is attached.
